Joan Haig writes fiction and nonfiction for children. Her debut novel Tiger Skin Rug (Cranachan Publishing) was nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2021 and is a Finalist in the People’s Book Prize Winter 2020/21 showcase. During the first lockdown, Joan edited Stay at Home! Poems and Prose for Children Living in Lockdown (Cranachan Publishing), a free anthology of work by 40 writers from across Scotland, illustrated by Darren Gate. Her next book, co-authored with Joan Lennon, is Talking History: 150 Years of Speeches (Templar, 2021). She lives in the Scottish Borders with her cats and other family.

This is a story about the power of one person to start a change and the spirit of a community to improve their locality by clearing all the rubbish on their beach.

Norrie lived in a small town by the sea. It was a fishing town with a harbour to one side and a sandy bay to the other. In the summertime, tourists would amble between the fishing boats and the beach, tripping over their towels and licking ice lollies.

Norrie liked the bay most when the tide was out. Town kids and tourists spent hours clambering on the rocks, netting crabs and counting limpets. Some families built sandcastles; others threw frisbees or played ‘fetch’ with their dogs. A group of girls liked to do handstands by the dunes.
