The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely. And then, one day, he was lost.

Throughout his emotional journey, Edward finds himself in the hands of different individuals, who treat him very differently to Abilene. 

This book introduces you to a range of characters caught up in the rush of life and fires home the message, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

Main Focus: Character Description

Kate DiCamillo constructs detailed character descriptions to make her characters come alive in the reader’s mind. Your children will use the sentences to create their own character descriptions.

In the more challenging activities, your class will explore the language used by the characters, the type of character they are and their thoughts on Edward.

Main Focus: Comprehension

In this Year 3 / year 4 comprehension resource for guided reading, your class will look at chapter 7 of ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.’

Your children will complete a range of question styles using the chapter. 

Main Focus: Punctuation

This printable resource covers the area of punctuation linked to chapter 2 of the story.

Your lower Ks2 class will be looking at: Capital letters, Full stops, Exclamation marks, Question marks, Inverted commas,Commas and Apostrophes.

The resource has been differentiated five ways to allow your children to focus on less aspects within the area of punctuation if required.

Main Focus: Spelling

This spelling activity is based around the spelling rules: ence, ense & ance and used sentences from the book. 

Your children will be required to sort the relevant words into the spelling categories and then challenged to think of their own examples or find more from the story.

Main Focus: Vocabulary Extension

This vocabulary extension task focuses on chapter 14 from the story. 

Your children will explore a range of vocabulary that is used int he chapter and look closer at the meanings and application of the words to new sentences and contexts.

Main Focus: Word Class

This guided reading resource helps your class with their understanding of word classification and focuses on chapter 5. 

For the children that require a more narrow focus, words have been identified and nouns, verbs and adjectives will be explored. 

This progresses with another word class being added, finishing off with nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs with a wider range of text.
