The Robot and the Bluebird

A Robot with a broken heart is sent to the scrapheap. An exhausted, migrating Bluebird shelters where the Robot’s heart used to be; he builds her a nest of wires.

The Robot loves the warmth and life the Bluebird brings to him and he offers to carry it through the cold lands to the warm south. When the Robot reaches his destination he is exhausted.

He asks the Bluebird to make its home in his heart. Now he stands forever, his rusted arms outstretched, while families of birds make their nests inside him and perch on him to sing.

This touching and uplifting story of friendship has large, bright and evocative illustrations and is ideal for sharing or classroom use.

Main Focus: Alphabetical Order

This resource is linked to alphabetical order and a passage from the beginning of the book.

Your class will place the chosen words or words of their choice into alphabetical order.

Main Focus: Adjectives (Linked to Character Feelings)

This resource focuses on adjectives and is aimed at Year 1 and Year 2. 

Your class will explore how the feelings of both the robot and the bird changed throughout the story.

Main Focus: Phonics

This is a phonics resource linked to phases 3-6.

Your class will read the extract taken from The Robot and the Bluebird story and locate the sounds within the words.

Main Focus: Punctuation

This is a punctuation resource aimed at Year 1 and Year 2 classes.

Your KS1 class will read the simple or complex sentences and decide where the capital letters and full stops will go.

This is a very useful activity that encourages your class to include full stops in their independent writing as well as recognising where the punctuation should go in a passage from the story.

Main Focus: Word Mat and Cloze Activity

This is a word mat and cloze activity that your class can complete linked to the story.

Your class will add the words or the pictures from the word mat to complete the sentences. They can also use the word mat to help with spelling.

Your class will look at the words used in context and recognise synonyms/phrases of similar meaning.

In this activity your class will read the passages and place the events from the story into the order in which they happened.

Main Focus: Word Class

In this activity, your class will read through the extract from the book and identify the nouns,  verbs and adjectives.

They will then sort the nouns, verbs and adjectives into categories.

Main Focus: Comprehension

We have differentiated this resource seven different ways to cater for all of KS1.

Your Year 1 / Year 2 class will read the entire story and then answer the questions as best they can.
